"The Ocean Is Broken"
Sailor: "After we left Japan, it felt as if the ocean itself was dead" — Nothing alive for over 3,000 miles — No longer saw turtles, dolphins, sharks, birds — Saw one whale, it appeared helpless with big tumor on head

Radioactive water leaks from 12 barriers:
The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant says radioactive water has overflowed 12 barriers around tanks holding radioactive water. Tokyo Electric Power Company says some of the water may have reached the ocean.
The utility says workers found water spilling from five barriers Sunday afternoon. They found additional leakages in seven barriers Sunday evening.
TEPCO says the barriers are 30-centimeter-high. Some of them have already contained at least 20-centimeters of rain water. But workers can pump out only a couple of centimeters a day.
More than 100 millimeters of rain was recorded at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant over four hours on Sunday afternoon.
The operator of the crippled plant also says workers released some of the water accumulated inside barriers into the ground. The utility says the water met safety standards for radioactivity set by the Nuclear Regulation Authority.
Govt. sets exposure limit for bus drivers:
The Japanese government has set the cumulative radiation exposure limit for bus drivers who will carry local residents in the event of nuclear accidents. It says drivers will have the same limit as the general public.
The government decided how to help municipalities within 30 kilometers of a nuclear power plant draw up their evacuation plans. It sets the yearly exposure limit for drivers at one millisievert.
The government also says the transport ministry will demand transport companies secure ways to safely evacuate people.
In addition, it says Japan's Self-Defense Forces will also discuss with municipal governments ways to transport people.
The central government will also train municipal workers in how to take iodine tablets. The tablets are distributed to households within 5 kilometers of a nuclear power plant in advance of a possible accident.
It says iodine helps prevent the thyroid gland from absorbing radioactive substances.
Abe to address rumors about seafood contamination:
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has promised to work to dispel rumors about seafood caught off Fukushima Prefecture being contaminated with radiation.
Abe visited Matsukawaura port in Fukushima Prefecture on Saturday. He has visited areas affected by the March 2011 disaster almost every month.
Post-accident fish auctions in Fukushima:
Auctions for fish caught off Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture took place on Saturday for the first time since the March 2011 nuclear accident.
The bidding was held at 4 wholesale markets in Fukushima Prefecture.

Heavy rains overflow barriers surrounding Fukushima water tanks

TEPCO announced on Monday that the water overflowed in 12 areas of the plant.
Heavy rains caused water to flow over the barriers of an artificial embankment which surrounds a dozen tanks of radioactive water at the plant. TEPCO reported that liquid containing a source of beta radiation was found beyond the levees.
The company said the incident was “due to heavy rain in the Tohoku region.” Company specialists are attempting to identify the amount of leaked water and the radiation levels present in the liquid.
Radioactivity levels in a well near a storage tank at the Fukushima nuclear power plant have risen immensely, the plant’s operator earlier reported, fueling ongoing concern about the impact of radiation on the surrounding environment.
