The General Directorate of Meteorology has released a statement saying that heavy snowfall is expected in Turkey on Wednesday night and warns of traffic-related problems.

The warning came after snow started falling in the capital city of Ankara early on Wednesday, covering the city in a short time. There has also been snowfall in Kayseri, Nevşehir, Sivas and Yozgat provinces.

As the snowfall intensified in Bolu and Ankara, highway maintenance teams shoveled the snow and salted the roads trying to open up the blocked highways, especially the TEM and D-100 near Bolu. The police also advised that people residing in these provinces should be careful when driving.

The directorate emphasized in its statement that heavy snowfall and blizzards will be seen on Thursday in some provinces that include Ağrı, Bitlis, Hakkari and Van and in the eastern parts of Şırnak, Siirt and Muş. “People [residing in these provinces] should be careful about possible ice and frost that might cause problems to traffic,” the statement read.

A mine explosion in western Turkey has killed 201, according to Energy Minister Taner Yildiz, and the toll could rise with many more still trapped.
Yildiz told reporters 787 workers were in the Soma mine when the explosion hit a power unit, Reuters reported.
Most of the confirmed dead were killed by carbon monoxide poisoning, Yildiz added.
An additional 80 people were injured and hospitalized, he said, four of them in critical condition.
AP reported that more than 200 miners are still trapped in the debris. More than 360 workers have been evacuated thus far.
Rescue workers pumped oxygen into the mine in an attempt to keep trapped miners alive, Reuters reported. A line of police held back thousands of family and fellow workers of the trapped miners who assembled outside of a Soma hospital.
"Fresh air, oxygen is being pumped into the mine. This is the most important thing for our workers down there," Yildiz said.

Description
Negligence allegations are being investigated in the town of Gulluk in the city of Mugla after 7 workers at a waste water treatment plant lost their lives yesterday due to inhaling methane gas. The Machine Engineering Chamber Representative of the Milas province had given a hazard report to the Gulluk waste water treatment plant in 2010. Despite this, the Republican Peoples’ Party (CHP) mayor of the period granted the facility final acceptance. According to a report in Zaman news, the report prepared before the provisional acceptance was not taken into consideration by the municipality. The town’s residents reacted to how the workers had not been given gas masks and how there had been no alarm device at the plant.
