Description

Sunbathers, swimmers and casual visitors at the world's longest beach, the Praia do Cassino (literally Casino Beach) in Rio Grande, Brazil, were captured by surprise this past Sunday when a bizarre natural phenomenon known as a Meteorological Tsunami, Meteotsunami or simply, weather-induced tsunami, hit the area. It caused the sea to swell and spill out a wave that reached all the way up to the parking spots (…or at least where people had parked their rides, possibly too close to the beach), and while humans escaped unscathed, their belongings, including dozens of vehicles, were damaged, as the body of water tossed the cars around on the sand. According to locals, this isn't the first time that such a tsunami has been observed in the area. Meteorological tsunami (meteotsunami) "Tsunami-like phenomena generated by meteorological or atmospheric disturbances. These waves can be produced by atmospheric gravity waves, pressure jumps, frontal passages, squalls, gales, typhoons, hurricanes and other atmospheric sources." "Meteotsunamis have the same temporal and spatial scales as tsunami waves and can similarly devastate coastal areas, especially in bays and inlets with strong ampli?cation and well-de?ned resonant properties."

Southern Britain was on alert as hurricane-force winds and heavy rain combined with high tides threatened more flooding misery.

South Wales and the South West were the first areas to be hit by the storm, which moved over the rest of southern England during the afternoon.
The Coastguard in Brixham, Devon, said waves of up to 46ft (14m) were forecast to hit some areas.

The extreme weather also puts more pressure on inland areas including the crisis-hit Somerset Levels.
Residents there have endured weeks of rain, with many evacuated over the last 48 hours with help from the Royal Marines.
Some 1,500 military personnel remain on standby in case the storm caused significant damage.

An elderly woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries after a tree fell on to the car she was travelling in.
The woman, thought to be in her 70s, suffered a chest injury and a broken leg during the accident in Yardley, Birmingham.
Another female passenger in the car was taken to hospital with neck pain.

The Met Office has issued amber severe weather warnings - meaning "be prepared" - for rain and wind across southern England and Wales until Sunday.
The Environment Agency has two severe flood warnings in place - meaning "danger to life" - in the Somerset Levels.
A third is in place in Chiswell, Dorset, where people were warned that rough seas could breach defences and launch shingle over the promenade.

A record wave has just hit Britain but forecasters warn far worse is coming [STEPHAN SLATER]

The largest wave ever seen in British waters was recorded at 3.30am yesterday by a buoy operated by the Plymouth Coastal Observatory at Porthleven, Cornwall.

The beast destroyed the previous record British wave of 67ft and forecasters warned it was only the beginning of 72 hours of storm hell.

It came as experts recommended a TSUNAMI warning system be installed in the Atlantic to protect Britain and Ireland from enormous waves they claimed were 'increasingly likely'.

The UK was battered by 90mph winds and torrential rain again overnight – but by far the most violent storm forecast in recent times is yet to hit with widespread damage and disruption expected in the coming days.

Parts of a key railway line were destroyed and nearly 10,000 homes were left without power as the brutal weather wreaked havoc yesterday.

Police helicopters were scrambled to help evacuate 150 properties in the Somerset flooding danger zone as David Cameron set up a £100million emergency fund to assist communities in coping with the crisis.

Winds of 105mph were recorded on the Isles of Scilly, off Cornwall while one pub in Chesil Beach, Dorset was completely submerged by a giant 60ft wave.

The latest storms saw Dawlish in Devon bear the brunt of the damage – with shocked locals claiming it felt like “the end of the world”.

Resident Robert Parker said: “It was like an earthquake.

“I’ve been in some terrible storms in the North Sea but last night was just a force of nature.”

Another local, Jeff Deacon, added: “This is surreal. I’ve never seen anything like this. There’s debris all over the road – it’s like a war zone.”

A 100ft stretch of seawall in the town collapsed into the swirling waters, leaving the railway line hanging in mid-air.

At least 297 families in three villages in Talisay City, Cebu were urged to evacuate their homes after huge waves hit the shorelines near their areas on Sunday evening. Talisay Public Information Officer Vince Monterde said Monday that around 9 p.m. of Sunday, the residents noticed huge waves and the waters went inside their houses. Monterde said the City Government convinced the affected families to evacuate, but they refused to move out, believing that the situation will go back to normal. The affected families include 95 in the village of Dumlog, 175 in Poblacion, and 32 in Cansojong. A total of 11 houses and two small fishing vessels were also destroyed, according to a report by the Talisay City Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. Monterde said Talisay City Mayor Johnny delos Reyes has ordered the city's social office to provide relief goods for the affected families. Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration Central Visayas Chief Oscar Tabada said the huge waves were brought by the southwest monsoon. As of this posting, the situation in Talisay City is back to normal, but Monterde advised the residents to go immediately to the nearest evacuation centers if the huge waves will strike back again. The evacuation areas are in barangay halls and at the Talisay City Sports Center.

Long night of dread for affected families

LEZHEL Genobisa’s family managed only a few hours of sleep yesterday morning after their home and a few other houses were washed out by waves caused by high tide in sitio Litmon, barangay Dumlog in Talisay City last Sunday evening.
“My husband, three children and I were shaking in fear. I saw the waves hitting the houses,” she said.
Genobisa, 23, lived near the dike that was supposed to help buffer the waves which reached as high as five to seven feet last Sunday.
Some families stayed across the coastal roads while others stayed at the Mother of Perpetual Help Chapel yesterday.
Genobisa is staying in a wooden waiting shed across the road where her house used to stand.
Her family was able to save two boxes and five sacks of clothes as they evacuated.
“We first made sure our children were safe here (waiting shed),” she told Cebu Daily News.
Another resident, Jovelyn Jubay and her 5-year-old son, were stranded inside their house for 30 minutes.
“I already heard the strong waves at 8 p.m and when I checked, the sea level had risen. I was alarmed,” Jubay said.
She and her son tried to leave but a column from her neighbor’s house fell and blocked their doorway.

Surge hits Talisay City villages; 297 families flee

CEBU (Updated) -- Close to 300 families living in three coastal barangays in Talisay City were forced to evacuate after meter-high waves hit their houses last Sunday night.
A government weather observer said the huge waves were caused by the seasonal southwest monsoon wind or habagat, enhanced by surges caused by Typhoon Ramil (international codename: Danas).
About 297 families living in Barangays Poblacion, Dumlog and Cansojong were forced to leave their homes after huge waves hit their houses around 9 p.m. last Sunday.
Vince Monterde, Talisay City public information officer, said that as of Monday, 170 families from Poblacion, 95 families from Dumlog and 32 families from Cansojong were displaced by the huge waves.

An estimated 50 houses were damaged or destroyed.
Baby Sanchez, 42, told Sun.Star Cebu that while she and her family were watching TV, huge waves from the sea suddenly entered her house through the windows.
Sanchez, a resident of Sitio Kalubihan in Poblacion, said that by the time she and her family got out of their house, their neighbors were running frantically away from the seaside.
Waves reaching about 1.6 meters high pummeled their houses and flooded their seaside village with knee-deep water.
Sanchez said those were the biggest waves she had ever seen. “Sobra ra kaayo to kataas, murag mulapas naman siguro sa tawo (They were too high; they towered over people’s heads),” she added.

As families scrambled to avoid the storm surge, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office sent a team to Talisay City. Officer Niel Sanchez said some 795 individuals were evacuated to the Poblacion Sports Complex.
Back in 2007, the residents were advised to move since they were living in the easement area, said Sanchez.

Description

Waves as high as seven metres pounded homes and businesses on Chile's coastline. The extreme conditions started on Wednesday with weather experts warning they could last until the weekend. High winds caused the tidal surges which have led emergency services to issue weather warnings to 11 regions in the South American country predicting strong winds, high tides and large waves. In the city of Vina del Mar about 120 kilometres west of the capital Santiago the waves washed over sea defences flooding coastal streets and damaging homes and businesses. Seaside resorts also suffered and one port was forced to close to all vessels. In another area eight homes were flooded and 32 people affected.

Huge waves hit Chile and Peru

Waves as high as 7m (22 ft) have hit parts of Chile and coastal areas are on alert as high winds and tidal currents sweep across parts of South America's coast. Footage showed huge waves surging onto the streets of Antofagasta in Chile where at least one injury was reported following the dangerous weather. In Peru, parts of the country's coastline were hit with waves as big as 5m (16 ft) and the weather caused flooded streets in the seaside city of Chimbote. Reged Ahmad reports.   Watch Video Here
