Description
A strong, shallow 6.0-magnitude earthquake rattled northern Thailand on Monday afternoon, geologists said, shaking tall buildings in Bangkok hundreds of miles to the south. The quake, at a shallow depth of 7.4 kilometers (4.5 miles), struck just after 6 pm local time (1100 GMT), around 27 kilometers (17 miles) from the mountainous northern city of Chiang Rai, the US Geological Survey said in a statement. There were no immediate reports of damage. The area is a remote mountain retreat popular with foreign tourists near to the border with Myanmar and Laos. The quake was felt as far south as Bangkok, 800 kilometers (500 miles) to the south, where tall buildings shook for several seconds. It was also felt in the Myanmar capital of Yangon, an AFP reporter there said. Major earthquakes are rare in Thailand, although tremors frequently strike the northern portion of the country.

One dead, 23 injured in Thai quake: official

BANGKOK – An elderly woman died and 23 other people were injured after a strong earthquake shook northern Thailand, an official said on Tuesday, as aftershocks continued to rattle the mountainous region popular with tourists.
The 83-year-old woman died when a wall in her house collapsed after the 6.0-magnitude struck quake on Monday afternoon, according to an official at the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department in Bangkok.
"Twenty-three people were also injured in separate incidents caused by the quake," the official told AFP, without giving further details.
The quake, which struck at a shallow depth of just 7.4 kilometres, had its epicentre in the remote Phan district of Chiang Rai province, geologists said, and was felt hundreds of miles to the south in Bangkok and even in Myanmar's commercial capital Yangon.
"Since last evening (Monday) there were six large aftershocks with a magnitude between 5.0 to 5.9 and the last was this morning," Burin Wechbunthung, of the Meteorological Department said, adding there were a dozen smaller tremors.

Thailand earthquake kills 1, injures several others

BANGKOK (AP) — Officials said Tuesday that one person was killed and several dozen were hurt in an earthquake that struck northern Thailand and Myanmar a day earlier, smashing windows, cracking walls and roads and damaging Buddhist temples.
The airport in Chiang Rai, a northern Thai city near the epicenter of the shallow magnitude 6.3 temblor, evacuated people from its terminal, where display signs and pieces of the ceiling fell. There was no damage to the runway or flight disruptions, airport General Manager Damrong Klongakara said.
A well-known temple near the city, the all-white Wat Rongkhun, was closed due to safety concerns after the earthquake.
"The spire of the main building came off and the tiles on the roof fell off," Chalermchai Kositpiphat, the artist who designed the temple, told Nation TV. "I still don't know how we can sleep tonight. ... It was shaking the whole time and then aftershocks followed four to five times."

Description
Two hospitals in Sa Kaeo have suspended service due to flooding in the province, Health Minister Pradit Sinthawanarong said yesterday. He said Tambon Non Mak Moon and Tambon Klong Takian health-promotion hospitals had been forced to temporarily stop offering services because they were under water. "Floodwater levels there are between 50 and 70 centimetres." Pradit said he also ordered hospitals in Lop Buri and Ayutthaya to closely monitor the flood situation. "(If the flood threat is imminent) medical supplies and medicines must be moved to safe areas. Power reserves must be available to ensure that floods won't disrupt the electrical system and treatment for patients," he said. The armed forces are now delivering help to flood victims in various provinces. Since last Wednesday, flooding has already ravaged many provinces in the country including Nakhon Ratchasima, Surin, Si Sa Ket, Ubon Ratchathani, Kanchana-buri, Nakhon Nayok, Ayutthaya, Angthong, Sing Buri, Lop Buri, Nakhon Sawan, Phitsanulok, Phichit, Kamphaeng Phet, and Prachin Buri."We have deployed flat-bottomed boats to help victims move their properties to higher ground. We have also fixed bridges that were damaged by raging floodwaters," Defence Ministry spokesman Thanatip Sawangsang said. He said PM Yingluck Shinawatra had instructed the Armed Forces Headquarters to support relevant agencies in flood-relief operations to minimise damage or casualties. Deputy Prime Minister Plodprasop Suraswadi, in his capacity as chair of the Water and Flood Management Commission, was most concerned about Ayutthaya. He said people living along the Chao Phraya could be affected the most, as farmers were releasing water from paddy fields to prepare for harvesting. Ayutthaya Governor Wittaya Phewpong said the river had already overflowed in eight districts. As for the situation in Bangkok, Thanatip said the Navy had deployed 16 boats to use their propellers to push floodwater to less flood-prone areas of the capital such as Bang Khen and Thawi Watthana canals.

Heavy rain in Thailand causes flooding in 7 provinces

Souce:Xinhua Publish By Updated 21/09/2013 12:25 am

Seven provinces in central and northeastern Thailand have been hit by flood, while rain is expected nationwide.
The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department revealed on Friday that a total of 17 districts of seven provinces have been hit by flash floods triggered by continuous heavy rain.
The affected provinces are central provinces of Phitsanulok, Ayutthaya, Angthong, and northeastern provinces of Kalasin, Surin, Si Sa Ket and Ubon Ratchathani.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department of Thailand has forecast torrential rain as likely countrywide, and the capital was hit by continuous rain overnight, causing water backup in some areas.
The weather agency said on Friday the tropical depression which came across central Vietnam, Laos to Thailand via northeastern Ubon Ratchathani province is now downgraded to a low pressure cell across the northeast, including the central provinces.

Description
Nearly 25,000 people have been evacuated to makeshift camps after floods ravaged eastern Myanmar, an official said Wednesday, as relief teams struggled to reach remote areas inundated by water. Flood waters have risen dramatically after several days of heavy rain in Karen State forcing thousands to flee to nearly 80 relief camps, Chum Hre, director of the social welfare, relief and resettlement department said. "Altogether 24,499 flood victims have been evacuated" in Karen State, he said, adding hundreds more had been displaced in Mon and Rakhine states. Heavy rains also inundated areas across the border in Thailand. Seven Thai provinces remained flooded yesterday, the Interior Ministry said in its daily update. Three people have died since Monday after they were hit by trees felled by fast-moving water, it added. In Thailand’s western town of Mae Sot, which borders the flood-hit area of Myanmar, waters have receded in the town centre but remain high in outlying areas, especially near the frontier checkpoint. The situation has returned to normal in Mae Sot city,” Pramote Chantasri, of Mae Sot City Municipality said. “The worst was on Monday after four days of heavy rain in the mountains,” he said, adding the bridge between the two countries remains open. Parts of Thailand and Myanmar are inundated each year during the monsoon period, which ends in October. Deadly floods in 2011 left more than 800 dead in Thailand, inundating swathes of the country for months, deluging parts of the capital and taking a heavy toll on the country’s lucrative manufacturing industry.
