Indonesian volcano may erupt again, keep evacuees from returning home

Seismic activity suggests one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia may erupt again, keeping evacuees from returning home, officials say.
Mount Sinabung erupted in September after being dormant for 400 years, and increased eruptions in November led to mass evacuations within a 3-mile zone around the volcano.
The threat of renewed eruptions means 18,412 evacuees have little hope of returning home any time soon, officials said.

The volcano at Mount Sinabung at Jakarta, Indonesia, erupted six times early Monday, shooting volcanic ash 2,000 meters into the sky.

Thousands have been evacuated from the region since the Sinabung volcano began erupting sporadically in September. 5,000 people were evacuated from the area the day before the eruption on Monday, bringing the total number of evacuees to 11,000. There have been no casualties so far.

Mt. Lokon active volcano erupts

Mount Lokon in Tomohon, North Sulawesi, erupted again at 6:30 a.m. local time on Monday, spewing volcanic material from the Tompaluan Lokon crater up to 1,500 meters in the air.
“The lava flow reached several northern area villages, namely Pineleng, Tanawangko and Tateli,” said National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho in Jakarta on Monday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
Sutopo said the explosion was heard as far away as Minahasa, which is 10 kilometers away from the volcano.
Mt. Lokon has been erupting continuously for years, as such, for the local residents watching the volcano erupt is normal. Moreover, the volcanic materials have made the farming land in Tomohon fertile.

6.7 magnitude Indonesian earthquake shakes Christmas Island

A magnitude 6.7 quake has shaken Christmas Island overnight.

A SHALLOW 6.7 magnitude earthquake has struck off Indonesia's main island of Java, shaking Christmas Island, more than 400km away. The quake struck at 11.47pm (local time) (12.47am WST) and was felt by residents on the island. There are no immediate reports of damage. According to Geoscience Australia, the quake had a magnitude of 6.7 and was triggered at a depth of 9km. The US Geological Survey said the quake struck at 11.47pm (local time) at a depth of 11km in Indonesian waters some 170km east of Christmas Island, and 423km south of the Indonesian capital Jakarta. The quake caused tall buildings in Jakarta to sway slightly. The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said there was no potential for a tsunami. ``There are no immediate reports of damage or casualties, but we know the quake was felt in several parts of Java,'' an agency spokesman said. ``There is no potential for a tsunami.'' The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre did not issue an alert after the quake. Indonesia sits on the Pacific ``Ring of Fire'' where continental plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity. Christmas Island is 2600km North West of Perth and about 450km south of Indonesia.It is the main destination for asylum seekers who take the perilous journey from Indonesia to Australia and currently houses hundreds of those waiting for asylum applications to be processed. ....
