Description
An explosion of ammonia gas killed at least five workers at Ukrainian chemical maker PAT Concern Stirol, the prosecutor general’s office said. The leak occurred at 2 p.m. today during maintenance in Horlivka, eastern Ukraine, where the plant is based, according to a statement released on the the website of the regional prosecutors office, which opened a criminal probe. Stirol belongs to Ukrainian billionaire Dmitry Firtash.

The ministry said that a pipe carrying liquid ammonia depressurized Tuesday at the Stirol plant in the east of the country, causing the release of the chemical. The ministry refused to provide further details. The plant said on its website that the faulty pipe was soon fixed and there was no danger to the population in nearby areas. Production of chemical fertilizers is a key sector of the Ukrainian economy.

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine's Emergency Situations Ministry says an ammonia leak at a chemical plant has killed five people and sickened more than 20.
The ministry said that a pipe carrying liquid ammonia depressurized Tuesday at the Stirol plant in the east of the country, causing the release of the chemical. The ministry refused to provide further details.
The plant said on its website that the faulty pipe was soon fixed and there was no danger to the population in nearby areas. Production of chemical fertilizers is a key sector of the Ukrainian economy.

Forty-four workers evacuated a jack-up rig in the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday and two Houston-based companies worked to curb uncontrolled flow of natural gas from a well on which the rig was working. Hercules Offshore said its Hercules 265 rig is operating for Walter Oil & Gas Corp. No one was injured in the evacuation, and no oil was spilled, said Tim O'Leary, a spokesman for Walter Oil & Gas. The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement said the well is 55 miles off the coast of Louisiana in 154 feet of water. Walter Oil & Gas reported the loss of well control to the safety bureau Tuesday morning, the agency said. Bureau inspectors reported a dissipating light sheen on the Gulf surface, 50 feet by one-half mile in size. The rig was working on a sidetrack well - drilled adjacent to an existing one - in preparation for production, the safety bureau said. Earlier this month, a 40-year-old well owned by a subsidiary of Houston-based Talos Energy well leaked natural gas into the Gulf for four days before responders plugged the leak and permanently sealed the well with cement.

The U.S. Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement said beams supporting the derrick and rig floor on the Hercules Offshore rig collapsed over the structure. BSEE also said a third firefighting vessel was enroute to the scene, though no sheen was seen on the water's surface during overflights conducted on Wednesday morning.

Gulf rig partially collapses in fire off Louisiana




A fire broke out on a gas well in the Gulf of Mexico late Tuesday, hours after dozens of workers were evacuated due to an out-of-control leak. No injuries are reported. Officials haven't said how or when they'll attempt to put out the blaze. (July 24)

HOUSTON (Reuters) - A shallow-water Gulf of Mexico drilling rig has partially collapsed off the coast of Louisiana after catching fire because of a ruptured natural gas well, U.S. regulators said on Wednesday.

The U.S. Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement said beams supporting the derrick and rig floor on the Hercules Offshore jackup rig had crumpled over the rig structure. A third firefighting vessel was en route to the scene, though no sheen was seen on the water's surface during overflights conducted on Wednesday morning, the regulator said.

The fire ignited shortly before 11 p.m. CDT on Tuesday. The Walter Oil & Gas-owned well had ruptured hours earlier as Hercules worked to prepare it for production. The well released natural gas, but no oil, according to BSEE.

No one was on board when the rig caught fire, BSEE said. Hercules said 44 people were evacuated after the rupture and no injuries were reported. The rig is in 154 feet of water about 55 miles south of the coast of Louisiana.

The blowout happened about 9:50 a.m. on Hercules Platform No. 265, which is located about 40 miles south and 10 to 15 miles west of Grand Isle, according to the Coast Guard.
Officials told WDSU that 44 people were evacuated on two life boats, and all are said to be OK.
An environmental assessment has not yet taken place. Initial reports indicated the platform was designed for oil exploration, but a Jefferson Parish official describes it as a natural gas platform.

Description
Negligence allegations are being investigated in the town of Gulluk in the city of Mugla after 7 workers at a waste water treatment plant lost their lives yesterday due to inhaling methane gas. The Machine Engineering Chamber Representative of the Milas province had given a hazard report to the Gulluk waste water treatment plant in 2010. Despite this, the Republican Peoples’ Party (CHP) mayor of the period granted the facility final acceptance. According to a report in Zaman news, the report prepared before the provisional acceptance was not taken into consideration by the municipality. The town’s residents reacted to how the workers had not been given gas masks and how there had been no alarm device at the plant.

Seven people died as a result of methane poisoning in Milas district of Mugla province of Turkey, CNN Türk channel reported on Tuesday.
According to the report, the poisoning occurred on one of the pumping stations receiving sewage from nearby factories. Workers who conducted the repair work at the station, got poisoned after inhaling methane.
All seven people poisoned by methane died in hospitals where they had been delivered.
A criminal case is started, the incident is under investigation.

There are some frayed nerves tonight after an evacuation was ordered this afternoon for a mobile home park in the 1500 block of Burnside Avenue in Sioux Falls. That evacuation came after a gas line in the area was punctured. Fire rescue thought the worst was about to happen and that's when they took action. It is the type of scene that makes a pit in your stomach. Flashing lights all other the place. People standing in confused clusters, trying to fully understand what is happening. Polo Baiz was one of those people. "They knocked on the door and told me to get out because they could see there was gas leaking." Polo lives at the Shady Acres Mobile Home Park and was one of many who were told to get out of their homes and go...quickly....by Sioux Falls Fire Rescue. "We evacuated 43 trailers in the complex as a precaution." Captain Troy Scandin with Sioux Falls Fire Rescue says a resident of the mobile home park was trying to build a deck when he punctured a half-inch gas lines about six inches underground. But Fire Rescue was worried he may have punctured a 6 inch high capacity gas line. "We were worried for public safety and for the structures." So firefighters went door to door to get people out of the park and those people, like Brianne Carias, were nervous and scared and not sure what would happen next. "I knew that we should be careful though right now....since all that gas is over there. We gotta be really careful." Among Fire Rescue's concerns: there was no breeze while the line was leaking, meaning any gas in the area was just hanging around instead of dissipating.
