Epidemiologist back from Fukushima: “We’re talking about a sacrifice zone and millions of people live in this area” — Exceeds allowable radiation dose for nuclear workers 40 kilometers from Fukushima plant (VIDEO)

At 18:00 in
Epidemiologist Dr. Steve Wing, University of North Carolina — Chapel Hill, discusses the human impacts of the Fukushima nuclear disaster based on his visit to the area: This reading here, just to put it in perspective, the guard there if he stood there for a year, right where he is now in this picture, he would exceed the allowable radiation dose for a nuclear workers inside a plant. And this is 40 kilometers away. So we’re talking about a sacrifice zone, and millions of people live in this area.
So the guard — can you see on the ground behind the guard there’s a metal plate? He’s supposed to stand on that metal plate, and that’s his protection. And he’s wearing a surgical mask, and he has a helmet. It made me feel kind of bad, that here is someone that’s working in a radiation exposed job and he’s been issued a surgical mask and a helmet as though he’s supposed to feel protected.

Deteriorated joints may be cause of water leaks
The operator of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant says deteriorated resin filler probably caused water leaks from barriers surrounding contaminated water tanks.
Tokyo Electric Power Company found a total of 225 tons of water leaked from 2 concrete barriers at the plant on Tuesday.
It also found that the remaining water in the barriers contained radioactive strontium at a level of up to 44 times higher than the government limit.
TEPCO says it drained the water from the barriers and no cracks were seen at the bottom of the concrete.

Tohoku utility applies for reactor safety check
Tohoku Electric Power Company has applied for a government safety screening of one of the reactors at its Onagawa plant with a view to restarting it. The plant is located on the Pacific coast of Miyagi Prefecture.
The application is the first for a reactor affected by the March 2011 disaster in northeastern Japan.

Jan. 16 May Be Last Best Chance to Search for Comet ISON’s Remains

Is there any hope of detecting what’s left of Comet ISON after the sun proved too much for its delicate constitution? German amateur astronomer Uwe Pilz suggest there remains a possibility that a photographic search might turn up a vestige of the comet when Earth crosses its orbital plane on January 16, 2014.

Comet ISON is located high in the northern sky near the familiar "W" or "M" or Cassiopeia during the time of orbital crossing. Stellarium

On and around that date, we’ll be staring straight across the sheet of debris left in the comet’s path. Whatever bits of dust and grit it left behind will be “visually compressed” and perhaps detectable in time exposure photos using wide-field telescopes. To understand why ISON would appear brighter, consider the bright band of the Milky Way. It stands apart from the helter-skelter scatter of stars for the same reason; when we look in its direction, we peer into the galaxy’s flattened disk where the stars are most concentrated. They stack up to create a brighter band slicing across the sky. Similarly, dust shed by Comet ISON will be “stacked up” from Earth’s perspective on the 16th.

CRACKLING SUNSPOT:

by Dr. Tony Phillips.
AR1936 is waking up. The sunspot has a 'beta-gamma-delta' magnetic field that harbors energy for strong eruptions, yet it has been quiet for days. Now AR1936 is beginning to crackle with flares. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the extreme ultraviolet flash from an almost-M-class flare at 1800 UT on Dec. 28th:
Because the sunspot is facing Earth, any flares emanating from it are going to be geoeffective. So far, the extreme ultraviolet "crackles" have produced only minor waves of ionization in our planet's upper atmosphere. Earth-effects will increase, however, if the activity continues to intensify.

Observing
The Quadrantid meteor shower is one of the strongest meteor showers of the year, but observers can be disappointed if conditions are not just right. The point from where the Quadrantid meteors appear to radiate is located within the extinct constellation Quadrans Muralis. On modern star charts, this radiant is located where the constellations Hercules, Boötes, and Draco meet in the sky. The shower can appear almost nonexistent until about 11 p.m. Unfortunately, the radiant does not attain a very high altitude for most Northern Hemisphere observers before morning twilight puts an end to the show. The best observations are actually possible from countries with high northern latitudes, such as Canada, Finland, Sweden, and Norway. The display is virtually nonexistent for observers in the Southern Hemisphere.
The Quadrantids generally begin on December 28 and end on January 7, with maximum generally occurring during the morning hours of January 3/4. The Quadrantids are barely detectable on the beginning and ending dates, but observers in the Northern Hemisphere can see from 10 to around 60 meteors per hour at maximum. The maximum only lasts for a few hours.
There are other, weaker meteor showers going on around the same time as the Quadrantids. The Quadrantids are medium-paced when compared to meteors from other meteor showers. When you see a meteor, mentally trace it backwards. If you end up where Hercules, Boötes, and Draco meet in the sky then you have probably seen a Quadrantid meteor! If you are not sure where the Quadrantid radiant is in the sky, the following chart will help you find it from the Northern Hemisphere:
Location of the Quadrantids
For Northern Hemisphere Observers
This represents the view from mid-northern latitudes at about 1:00 a.m. local time around January 4. The graphic does not represent the view at the time of maximum, but is simply meant to help prospective observers to find the radiant location. The red line across the bottom of the image represents the horizon. (Image produced by the Author using SkyChart III and Adobe Photoshop.)

All Sky Fireball Network
Every night, a network of NASA all-sky cameras scans the skies above the United States for meteoritic fireballs. Automated software maintained by NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office calculates their orbits, velocity, penetration depth in Earth's atmosphere and many other characteristics. Daily results are presented here on Spaceweather.com.
On Dec. 27, 2013, the network reported 16 fireballs.

New version of 2009 pandemic flu virus surges; targets healthy middle-aged people and young adults

Published: Friday, Dec. 27, 2013 - 10:29 pm
Last Modified: Friday, Dec. 27, 2013 - 10:39 pm

Just days after a Christmas Eve federal health advisory, Sacramento County’s top public health official warned Friday of a sudden increase in local influenza activity, possibly led by a strong resurgence of a version of the virus behind the 2009 worldwide flu pandemic.
Olivia Kasirye, the county’s public health officer, said the viral strain known as influenza A pH1N1 is atypical because it tends to hit young people and healthy adults the hardest. In 2009, the H1N1 virus caused more illness in children and young adults, compared to older adults.
“From last week to the current one, we saw a significant increase in the percentage of positive flu tests, from 6 percent to 20 percent,” Kasirye said. “Young people and healthy middle-aged people are some of the cases we have right now. Being otherwise healthy is a risk factor for this virus.”
Kasirye said though individuals in good health may not believe they need a flu vaccine, the behavior of the pH1N1 virus – a version slightly different than the 2009 virus – presents an argument in favor of getting vaccinated. “We want people to be aware, to know that it’s out there.”
State and federal officials confirmed that the pH1N1 virus is the “predominant strain” circulating so far this season both in California and nationwide. Statewide, no influenza outbreaks have been reported to date and only local – as opposed to regional – cases have popped up, according to data collected by the state up to Dec. 14.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an advisory Tuesday to physicians alerting them to “severe respiratory illness among young and middle-aged adults, many infected with influenza A pH1N1 virus. Multiple hospitalizations, including many requiring intensive care unit admission, and some fatalities have been reported.”
Among 1,071 known influenza cases between Oct. 1 and Dec. 21, the CDC reported, 92.6 percent were influenza A, and 97.7 percent of those were subcategory 2009 pH1N1.
“If pH1N1 virus continues to circulate widely,” the CDC warned, “illness that disproportionately affects young and middle-aged adults may occur.”
Kasirye’s information on the local percentage increase of flu cases week-to-week is based on informal data reported from three major hospital systems. Only one of the hospitals had hard numbers instead of just percentages to share – out of 867 specimens, 164 tested positive for the influenza A virus and nine tested positive for influenza B viruses also targeted by this year’s vaccine.

At Least 5 Dead In Texas From H1N1 "Swine" Flu

By: CBS (posted by Greg Palmer)
HOUSTON Tex (CBS) One of the biggest health concerns each winter is flu season. And the Centers for Disease Control says the flu is widespread in four southern states: Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

In some cases, it has turned deadly.
Dustin Wright, 30, of Euless, Texas, came down with the flu the week before Thanksgiving.

His wife Ashley Wright recalled, “He was achy, feverish, and chilled, nothing really more than that.”

Ashley Wright says a few days later, the husband and father was struggling to breathe, so she rushed him to the emergency room. Doctors told her he had the H1N1 strain -- swine flu. On December 5, he died.

Ashley Wright said, “You don't think it would happen to you, you know. We always worried about my son getting the flu shot. We're never really worried about the two of us because you don't really hear about any of this. You don't think it will happen to you.”
