Description
Prime Minister Viktor Orban has ordered an extraordinary investigation concerning the recent death of eight premature babies in the county hospital of Miskolc in northern Hungary. State secretary for health Miklos Szocska told public Kossuth Radio on Tuesday that the investigation sought to establish a connection between the deaths, which occured at the hospital’s premature ward between August 5 and 10. He said that the hospital management had alarmed health authorities after the third death and took measures but could not prevent further deaths which occured in rapid succession. Late on Monday, Szocska visited the hospital and said that closing down the ward was not necessary. Hospital director Gabor Csiba has been suspended from his position for the time of the investigation.

BUDAPEST: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has ordered an inquiry into the deaths of eight premature babies in five days at a hospital in the northeastern city of Miskolc.
Health state secretary Miklos Szocska said alongside the announcement of the inquiry late on Monday that the National Surgeon General's office was doing all it could to find out why the eight premature babies died. He told Kossuth radio on Tuesday that the babies died between Aug. 5 and Aug 10.
"There are investigations under way to reveal any potential infection," Szocska said in a video posted on the government's official website, adding he would not yet close the specialised department at the Borsod-Abauj-Zemplen hospital which treats hundreds of permaturely born babies each year.
