Fracking-linked earthquakes likely to worsen – seismologists

Ongoing hydraulic fracking operations will only exacerbate seismic activity, leading to heightened earthquakes in areas where wastewater is injected deep underground, according to new research.
To unleash natural gas, hydraulic fracturing - or fracking - requires large volumes of water, sand, and chemicals to be pumped underground. Scientists attending the Seismological Society of America (SSA) annual meeting said Thursday that this storage of wastewater in wells deep below the earth’s surface, in addition to fracking’s other processes, is changing the stress on existing faults, which could mean more frequent and larger quakes in the future.
Researchers previously believed quakes that resulted from fracking could not exceed a magnitude of 5.0, though stronger seismic events were recorded in 2011 around two heavily drilled areas in Colorado and Oklahoma.
“This demonstrates there is a significant hazard,” said Justin Rubinstein, a research geophysicist at the US Geological Survey (USGS), according to TIME magazine. “We need to address ongoing seismicity.”
Not all of the more than 30,000 fracking disposal wells are linked to quakes, but an accumulating body of evidence associates an uptick in seismic activity to fracking developments amid the current domestic energy boom.
The amount of toxic wastewater injected into the ground seems to provide some clarity as to what causes the earthquakes. A single fracking operation uses two to five million gallons of water, according to reports, but much more wastewater ends up in a disposal well.

Local City Council Demands Planetarian Response
"Urgent international rescue" needed
Consistent with its ground-breaking leadership role pioneering local official resistance to unregulated cell tower proliferation, GMO foods, and 'smart' meter deployment, the Fairfax, CA City Council, on Dec. 4, 2013, became one of the first municipal jurisdictions to unanimously approve a measure advocating for 1 an independent expert panel to be formed by the UN General Assembly for transparent international involvement in mitigating the on-going Fukushima nuclear disaster and 2 asking for government monitoring of seafood for radioactivity from Fukushima pollution.

Fukushima nuclear meltdown causes thyroid condition in California babies

Fukushima nuclear meltdown causes thyroid condition in California babies

American scientists believe that the Fukushima nuclear fallout has impacted the health of babies born in California around the time of the Japanese power plant disaster. An upcoming review has revealed an increase in the number of newborns with congenital hypothyroidism, a rare but serious condition normally affecting about one child in 2,000.

Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormone. The researchers believe the condition was triggered by the radioactive contamination traveling 5,000 miles across the Pacific.
In their study, which is to be published next week in peer-reviewed Open Journal of Pediatrics, the scientists examined congenital hypothyroidism rates in newborns and compared data for babies exposed to radioactive Iodine-131 and born between March 17 and December 31, 2011 with unexposed newborns delivered before the meltdown plus those born in 2012.
The results have been revealed in a paper titled “Changes in confirmed plus borderline cases of congenital hypothyroidism in California as a function of environmental fallout from the Fukushima nuclear meltdown.”
It showed that hypothyroidism increased by 21% in the group of babies that were exposed to excess radioactive Iodine in the womb, while “borderline cases” in the same group surged by 27%.
After the Fukushima Daiichi explosion, the winds blew the toxic iodine and other volatile radionuclides out to sea and to the Pacific. Although much of the toxic waste dispersed on its way to the US West Coast, small amounts of I-131 were measured in milk and led to widespread concern.
One of the reasons for this is that radio-Iodine is associated with thyroid cancer in children. According to the Global Research Center, which studies the effects of globalization, the past six months saw an increase in thyroid cancer among children aged 0-18 from the affected prefecture following the Fukushima catastrophe, with up to 53 cases confirmed.
Meanwhile, the Japanese authority has been repetitively dismissing the catastrophe as a potential cause of health effects in Japan, let alone California, citing the official estimates that claim the “dose” was too “low” for unborn babies to be affected.

Radioactive Fukushima Water Headed for US West Coast

As nuclear industry and allies in government play down risk, scientists warn there is no such thing as safe radiation

Radioactive water contaminated by Japan's ravaged Fukushima nuclear plant will soon reach the west coast of the United States, according to Chairwoman of U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Allison Macfarlane, Bloomberg reports.
As the nuclear industry and its allies in government attempt to play down the danger of the contaminated ocean waters, scientists warn there is no such thing as safe radiation.
“The highest amount of radiation that will reach the U.S. is two orders of magnitude — 100 times — less than the drinking water standard," Macfarlane told Bloomberg. "So, if you could drink the salt water, which you won’t be able to do, it’s still fairly low.”
Her claims of safety come on the heels of repeated efforts by TEPCO, the nuclear industry and the Japanese government to cover up and play down the spiraling Fukushima nuclear crisis.
Yet, scientists warn that claims that radiation is not harmful are deceptive.
Over 800 people across the world will get cancer from consuming fish that were contaminated with Fukushima radiation in Japanese waters by mid-July, 2013, according to newspaper Georgia Straight calculations based on a cancer risk formula developed by the Environmental Protection Agency and radiation levels in fish tested by the Japanese Fisheries Agency.
"This is not a one time wave that washes the shore and goes away. Fukushima is continuing to pollute the ocean."—Arnie GundersenThis is likely only the tip of the iceberg, explained Daniel Hirsch, a nuclear-policy lecturer at the University of California at Santa Cruz, in an interview with Georgia Straight. The number 800 does not account for future fish consumption, unmonitored damaged isotopes released by the Fukushima disaster and a host of other factors that could drastically increase cancer rates, he explained.
Scientists note it is difficult to predict the cancer rates for those on North America's west coast, and that these cancer statistics do not include a host of other potential ill health effects, including heart disease and genetic damage.
"All radiation is unsafe," said Arnie Gundersen, former nuclear industry executive turned whistleblower, in an interview with Common Dreams. "There is no non-harmful level."
Meanwhile, west coast cities are growing nervous. The San Francisco Bay area city of Fairfax, California passed a resolution earlier this week calling for increased testing of coastal seafood and a reduction of radiation emissions from Fukushima.
Gundersen warned that the danger will only increase from here. "The faucet is still on. The Pacific is still becoming more contaminated," he said. "This is not a one time wave that washes the shore and goes away. Fukushima is continuing to pollute the ocean."

Fairewinds chief engineer Arnie Gundersen interviewed by Prof. Harvey Wasserman, Nov. 18, 2013 (at 22:00 in): The boron between the nuclear fuel has disintegrated. It was never designed for the temperatures it's seen and it was never designed for saltwater. So there's no assurance that you've got boron neutron absorbers between the nuclear fuel rods. So you've got what we call an inadvertent criticality — you've got the chance of the nuclear fuel pool becoming a nuclear reactor when it didn't want to be, as they pull these rods out. So they have to be extraordinarily careful that they dont snap a rod and extraordinarily careful that as they're pulling these rods, that the dont get an inadvertent criticality.

Bloomberg, Nov. 18, 2013: Were the rods [in the Unit 4 pool] to break or overheat, it could prompt a self-sustained nuclear chain reaction similar to the meltdowns at three Fukushima reactors.

NHK WORLD, Nov. 18, 2013: Spent fuel contains about one percent plutonium by weight. The spent fuel units at the No.4 reactor building have been in the storage pool for at least 3 years. Each is said to have up to 7,500 trillion becquerels of radioactivity. Because of this, the units are stored in water that can block radiation.

The work continues on November 19, 2013, and TEPCO hopes to load the cask with 22 unused (new) fuel assemblies before the cask is lowered by the gantry crane to the ground.
Removal of fuel assemblies in SFP4 is to continue for a year.

How did dozens of pilot whales get so seriously stranded in Florida's Everglades National Park?

How whales lose their way: Toxins, tides and other troubles

Video: A race to save a group of stranded pilot whales in a remote part of the Florida Everglades continues Thursday. NBC’s Mark Potter reports.
How did dozens of pilot whales get so seriously stranded in Florida's Everglades National Park? This week's marine mammal drama raises questions about the peculiar biology and sociology of short-finned pilot whales, as well as factors ranging from disease outbreaks to astronomy.
How common is it to have wayward whales?
"These sorts of strandings with pilot whales are not uncommon," said Phillip Clapham, who heads the Cetacean Assessment and Ecology Program at the National Marine Mammal Laboratory in Seattle. The most recent whale stranding in the Everglades was back in 1995, but about 20 whales were beached elsewhere on the Florida coast in 2011, and again last year.

This time around, 51 whales wound up stranded: As of Thursday afternoon, 11 whales were found dead or had to be euthanized. About 35 were alive and making their way offshore, said Blair Mase, a fisheries stranding coordinator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. She said that left about five missing whales. At least some of those whales may have died and sunk beneath the surface.
What causes the whales to lose their way?
Lots of factors can play a part. "Every time you throw in one more element, you increase the chance of stranding," Clapham said.

For example, researchers say parasites or infections can confuse the whales' sense of navigation. Pilot whales can suffer from morbillivirus, a strain that's related to the virus implicated in this year's dolphin die-off. Clapham doubts that virus caused this week's strandings. Nevertheless, biologists in Florida have taken tissue samples from the 11 dead whales, and they'll be studying those samples for signs of toxins over the weeks and months ahead.
Human activity has the potential to confuse whales as well — perhaps through sonar or seismic disruptions, or interaction with fisheries. Those causes also seem unlikely in the Everglades case. The most likely factors are environmental: shifts in currents, changes in the underwater terrain, a turnabout in the weather, or perhaps the influence of tides.

Some Stranded Whales In Fla. Moving Out To Sea

Wildlife officials in southwest Florida who are struggling to save dozens of beached pilot whales say there's hope that at least some of the animals might escape after they spotted at least 20 of them swimming in deeper water.
The Associated Press reports:
"Blair Mase, a fisheries stranding coordinator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said a Coast Guard helicopter found two pods of whales in about 12 feet of water, 'significantly north' of their previous location in Everglades National Park. The short-finned pilot whale is a deep-water species that cannot survive long in the shallows."
, the stranding of about 45 pilot whales was first noticed on Tuesday in a remote area of Florida's Everglades.
NPR's Greg Allen reports from Miami that more than 30 people and about 15 boats are involved Thursday in an ongoing operation to redirect the whales.

Whale rescue effort continues in Florida's Everglades as pods move to deeper waters

A pod of more than 30 stranded pilot whales have moved into deeper water. NBC's Mark Potter reports.
Pods of 35 stranded pilot whales were moving into deeper waters of Florida’s Everglades National Park, raising hopes for their survival, officials said Thursday.
Three pods were located nine miles north of their original location on the Gulf of Mexico side of the park and moving offshore, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fisheries official Blair Mase said at a Thursday afternoon teleconference, adding that the animals were in 12 feet of water by midafternoon.
Mase said the whales may defy the odds and reach their normal deep-ocean range.
By Thursday afternoon, 11 whales had been found dead and five others were unaccounted for, according to Mase.

The whales had been stranded in a remote area of the park near Highland Beach, more than 20 miles from waters deep enough to support them.
Earlier in the day, the U.S. Coast Guard had spotted two pods of whales “significantly north” in 12 feet of water swimming offshore near Seminole Point, Mase said.
The movement was a “rare occasion” and an encouraging sign, Mase said. She said the organization was prepared for the worst as mass strandings are often difficult to reverse.
“They’re still out of their normal home range,” she said, adding that the whales may be suffering from dehydration and malnutrition.
"They need to be in deep water in order to feed. If we can’t get them out, they could begin to be starving themselves," said Linda Friar, spokesman for Everglades National Park.
Citing a similar mass stranding in the mid-90s, Mase said, “We did have animals strand in the park area and they split up and groups were further south, but they all ended up stranding eventually.”
As a part of the new rescue efforts, teams from NOAA, the National Park Service and state wildlife organizations used noises, including aluminum pipes and engines, in an attempt to steer the whales away from the shallows.
“This particular area is extremely unique, it’s not herding them out of a lagoon,” Mase said early Thursday. “We’re herding them miles and miles. It’s very tricky.”

The billboard that produces potable water out of air

LocoTV Dos LocoTV Dos

Published on Mar 7, 2013
Finally, a Billboard That Creates Drinkable Water Out of Thin Air

I've never cared much for billboards. Not in the city, not out of the city — not anywhere, really. It's like the saying in that old Five Man Electrical Band song. So when the creative director of an ad agency in Peru sent me a picture of what he claimed was the first billboard that produces potable water from air, my initial reaction was: gotta be a hoax, or at best, a gimmick.

Except it's neither: The billboard pictured here is real, it's located in Lima, Peru, and it produces around 100 liters of water a day (about 26 gallons) from nothing more than humidity, a basic filtration system and a little gravitational ingenuity.

Let's talk about Lima for a moment, the largest city in Peru and the fifth largest in all of the Americas, with some 7.6 million people (closer to 9 million when you factor in the surrounding metro area). Because it sits along the southern Pacific Ocean, the humidity in the city averages 83% (it's actually closer to 100% in the mornings). But Lima is also part of what's called a coastal desert: It lies at the northern edge of the Atacama, the driest desert in the world, meaning the city sees perhaps half an inch of precipitation annually (Lima is the second largest desert city in the world after Cairo). Lima thus depends on drainage from the Andes as well as runoff from glacier melt — both sources on the decline because of climate change.

Enter the University of Engineering and Technology of Peru (UTEC), which was looking for something splashy to kick off its application period for 2013 enrollment. It turned to ad agency Mayo DraftFCB, which struck on the idea of a billboard that would convert Lima's H2O-saturated air into potable water. And then they actually built one.

It's not entirely self-sufficient, requiring electricity (it's not clear how much) to power the five devices that comprise the billboard's inverse osmosis filtration system, each device responsible for generating up to 20 liters. The water is then transported through small ducts to a central holding tank at the billboard's base, where you'll find — what else? — a water faucet. According to Mayo DraftFCB, the billboard has already produced 9,450 liters of water (about 2,500 gallons) in just three months, which it says equals the water consumption of "hundreds of families per month." Just imagine what dozens, hundreds or even thousands of these things, strategically placed in the city itself or outlying villages, might do. And imagine what you could accomplish in any number of troubled spots around the world that need potable water with a solution like this.

MAYO DRAFTFCB / UTEC
Mayo DraftFCB says it dropped the billboard along the Pan-American Highway at kilometer marker 89.5 when summer started (in December, mind you — Lima's south of the equator) and that it's designed to inspire young Peruvians to study engineering at UTEC while simultaneously illustrating how advertising can be more than just an eyesore. (Done and done, I'd say.)

"We wanted future students to see how engineers can also solve social needs in daily basis kinds of situations," said Alejandro Aponte, creative director at Mayo DraftFCB.

The city's residents could certainly use the help. According to a 2011 The Independent piece ominously titled "The desert city in serious danger of running dry," about 1.2 million residents of Lima lack running water entirely, depending on unregulated private-company water trucks to deliver the goods — companies that charge up to 30 soles (US $10) per cubic meter of H2O, or as The Independent notes, 20 times what more well-off residents pay for their tapwater.
