LOS ANGELES (AP) — Flash flooding north of Los Angeles sent water and mud flowing into canyons and across roadways Thursday, trapping drivers and closing a stretch of one of the state's main north-south freeways.

The California Highway Patrol reported a 30-mile section of Interstate 5 was blocked by flooding near Fort Tejon, about 75 miles north of downtown Los Angeles.

Drivers stuck in the mud waited for roads to be cleared while thousands more were diverted to alternate routes expected to take four or more hours to traverse through the mountain region in Southern California.

There were no immediate reports of any injuries.

"Due to the drought and fires, all the rain coming down heavily is causing floods," CHP Officer Andrew Mack said. "We have a lot of people up there trapped on the roadway."

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The latest on mudslides that closed a California interstate (all times local):
6:20 p.m.

All lanes of Interstate 5 have been reopened, about 24 hours after the major north-south artery linking Los Angeles and Central California was blocked by a mudslide.

A spokeswoman with the California Highway Patrol says all lanes were cleared shortly after 6 p.m. Friday. Two southbound lanes and the northbound ones were reopened earlier in the day.
A storm system that drenched northern Los Angeles County Thursday sent mud and debris onto the roadway, trapping hundreds of drivers. Highway crews worked overnight and throughout Friday to free vehicles and clear the roadway.

To the west, State Road 58 is expected to remain closed for days.
5:55 p.m.

A fresh round of flash flooding stranded dozens of vehicles on a highway in Central California, but the troubles appear to be only temporary.

Santa Barbara County fire spokesman Dave Zaniboni said the Friday afternoon flooding affected Highway 166 west of Cuyama. That's a remote, sparsely populated community about 50 miles north of Santa Barbara.

Zaniboni says about 100 vehicles, including a school bus, were stuck on the roadway at one time but that traffic began moving by Friday evening.

Description
An out-of-control brush fire at Camp Pendleton was creeping closer to the San Onofre nuclear power plant, prompting evacuations. Southern California Edison said in a tweet that "about a dozen non-essential employees evacuated" from the plant because of the fire. The plant is located off Interstate 5 at the Orange-San Diego county line north of Camp Pendleton. Edison announced last year it was closing the plant due to structural problems with facility. The Camp Pendleton fire was spotted shortly before 10 a.m. Wednesday and forced evacuations of the De Luz housing area, Mary Fay Pendleton Elementary School and the Naval Weapons Station Fallbrook, which is on the northeast edge of the sprawling base. A second school and housing area have been evacuated as the brush fire at Camp Pendleton continues to spread. The fire, dubbed the Tomahawk fire, on the northeast section of the base, had burned more than 150 acres as of 1 p.m., according to Cal Fire. An evacuation center was established at the Paige Fieldhouse on the base. The Pendleton fire was one of several blazes burning in San Diego County. One in Carlsbad has burned homes. More than 11,500 evacuation notices have been issued for the fire as it moves through neighborhoods amid steep brushy canyons.

Huge Pendleton fires nearly contained

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. — Firefighters continued making progress Sunday containing three fires that have blackened 21,900 acres on Camp Pendleton and Naval Weapons Station Fallbrook.
The largest of the fires, the fast-moving Las Pulgas Fire, had burned about 15,000 acres since it erupted for unknown reasons at about 3:15 p.m. on Thursday near a sewage plant in Camp Las Pulgas. The blaze was 75 percent contained Sunday afternoon, according to officials.

The first fire reported, the so-called Tomahawk Fire, broke out at Naval Weapons Station Fallbrook at the eastern outskirts of Camp Pendleton at about 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday and later spread to the Marine base. It was 100 percent contained Sunday and had blackened about 5,400 acres.
The most recent blaze to break out at Camp Pendleton, dubbed the San Mateo Fire, began spreading just before 11:30 a.m. on Friday near Basilone Road. It had grown to about 1,500 acres today and was 97 percent contained, according to base officials.
Gen. James F. Amos, the Commandant of the Marine Corps, and Brig. Gen. John W. Bullard, the Marine Corps Installations West commanding general, were briefed today on the three fires — known collectively as the Basilone Complex – - at Camp Pendleton. Amos and Sgt. Maj. Michael P. Barrett, sergeant major of the Marine Corps, also spoke with firefighters working to extinguish the blazes.

Description
The Los Angeles Fire Department says a ruptured oil pipe near the suburb of Glendale has spilled about 50,000 gallons of crude oil onto streets. According to the Fire Department, the leak from a 20-inch pipe was reported at about 12:15 a.m. Thursday in Atwater Village and the oil line was remotely shut off. No injuries were reported. Oil spilled over approximately half a mile and is knee-high in some areas. Firefighters and hazardous materials crews are on the scene. A handful of commercial businesses are affected, including a strip club that was evacuated. Fire Department spokesman Erik Scott says there's no "visible evidence" that the oil has entered storm drains, which empty into the Los Angeles River. But he says it's possible that oil has seeped under manhole covers.

The Los Angeles Fire Department says a ruptured oil pipe has caused about 10,000 gallons of crude oil to spill on to the city's streets.

The oil - which covers a half-mile area and is knee-high in some places - escaped after a break in an above-ground pipeline outside 5175 West San Fernando Road in the Atwater Village suburb.

According to Los Angeles Fire Department, oil was spurting 15 to 20 feet into the air from a burst 20-inch pipe, with the leak reported shortly after midnight local time.

The flow of oil to the pipe was remotely shut down shortly within 10 minutes of the burst being detected, but the leak continued for another 45 minutes.
A 20-inch oil pipeline is medium-sized by industry standards and would generally transport about 200,000 barrels per day based on average rates. There was no immediate information about the specific capacity or throughput of the line.

'This oil comes from the Bakersfield area, this is a pumping transfer station and pumping transfer station then transfers the oil to a storage facility in Long Beach,' Batallion Chief David Spence said.
Four workers at the nearby Baxter industrial plant were reportedly evaluated for general illness and respiratory concerns, with two of them taken to hospital, according to NBC Los Angeles,
Oil was seen shooting towards the sky and on to a nearby strip bar, The Gentlemen’s Club at around 1am local time. The Gentlemen's Club was subsequently evacuated, Los Angeles Fire Department said.

Four other commercial businesses are known to have been affected after LAPD completely shut down the Atwater Village area.

5.1 earthquake: Significant damage reported in some areas

By Louis Sahagun and Catherine Saillant
March 29, 2014, 1:18 p.m.

A series of temblors, punctuated by a magnitude 5.1 earthquake Friday night near La Habra, did more than just rattle nerves a few miles away in Fullerton, where residents had to deal with no water service, property damage and, in some cases, finding other accommodations.
Throughout the city, crews were working to repair broken water mains, leaking gas lines and other damage.
At least seven 8-inch water mains were broken, leaving an estimated 100 homes and businesses without water Saturday morning, officials said.
PHOTOS: 5.1 earthquake rattles L.A., Orange County
In the middle of the intersection of Gilbert Street and Rosecrans, a crew armed with shovels, earth movers and massive stainless water main clamps labored in a 12-by-20-foot hole eight feet under the pavement.
“We have five leaks as big as this one in this area alone,” worker Ed McClain said. “None of us slept a wink last night. We’ll keep going until these problems are fixed.”
Swaths of Gilbert Street had also been undermined by gushing water, leaving bowl-shaped depressions in the roadway.
Among those left high and dry was Sarah Lee, director of a nearby college preparatory business.
“Let me show you what we’re dealing with,” she said, turning the handle of the bathroom sink faucet. “Nothing.”
Lee then tapped the toilet handle and frowned: “Nothing.”
In the nearby community of Brea, which is served by the Fullerton Fire Department, a broken water main caused "moderate to heavy damage" at City Hall, said Fullerton fire Battalion Chief John Stokes.
In all, more than 70 people remained displaced at midday Saturday -- 54 of them from an apartment complex in the 2600 block of Associated Road where 20 units were red-tagged after the building suffered a cracked foundation, Stokes said.

The 5.1 magnitude earthquake that rattled Southern California on Friday night raises the possibility that a larger quake is on the way, seismologists said.
The swarm of earthquakes began at 8:03 p.m., when a 3.6 earthquake hit. That ended up being a foreshock of the largest earthquake to hit, a magnitude 5.1 at 9:09 p.m. At least two more aftershocks hit, a 3.4 at 9:11 p.m. and a 3.6 at 9:30 p.m.
U.S. Geological Survey seismologist Lucy Jones said the 5.1 quake has a 5% chance of being a foreshock of an even larger quake.

About Me

My photo
desertrose
I am a woman who has come back from the depths of the Abyss. Having to rediscover myself and who I truly am. My Journey has been a long and hard one. Who I thought I was has been stripped from me. Not by man, not by God but rather a fated day lost to the Abyss. The nothingness that returned me to this reality not knowing who I am. Not connected to that person I had sought so hard to become and stay faithful to.. I am having to learn to be human all over again. To establish a connection to the everyday that has been lost to me. So now my quest rather than enlightenment of a knowledge and existence I already possess is more the search for the connection to this life and existence in the here and now. My memories of myself, who I was, what I believed are now all "Echos From The Abyss" which has transformed me into whatever I am today and will grow to be tomorrow. A journey of self discovery and true self awareness.
