Comet Catalina grows two tails, soars at dawn

November 23, 2015 by Bob King, Universe Today

Amateur astronomer Chris Schur of Arizona had only five minutes to observe and photograph Comet Catalina this morning before twilight got the better of the night. In that brief time, he secured two beautiful images and made a quick observation through his 80mm refractor. He writes:
"Very difficult observation on this one. (I observed) it visually with the 35mm Panoptic ocular. It was a round, slightly condensed object with no sign of the twin tails that show up in the images. After five minutes, we lost it visually as it was 2° degrees up in bright twilight. Images show it for a longer time and a beautiful emerald green head with two tails forming a Y shaped fan."
North is up and east to the left in these two photos of the comet made by Dr. D.T. Durig at 6:23 a.m. EST on Nov. 21st from Cordell-Lorenz Observatory in Sewanee, Tenn. He estimated the coma diameter at ~2 arc minutes with a tail at least …

Schur estimated the comet's brightness at around magnitude +6. What appears to be the dust extends to the lower right (southeast) with a narrower ion tail pointing north. With its twin tails, I'm reminded of a soaring eagle or perhaps a turkey vulture rocking back and forth on its wings. While they scavenge for food, Catalina soaks up sunlight.

I also headed out before dawn for a look. After a failed attempt to spot the new visitor on Saturday, I headed down to the Lake Superior shoreline at 5:30 a.m. today and waited until the comet rose above the murk. Using 7×50 binoculars in a similar narrow observing window, I could barely detect it as a small, fuzzy spot 2.5° south of 4th magnitude Lambda Virginis at 5:50 a.m. 10 minutes after the start of astronomical twilight. The camera did better!

A series of three earthquakes shook Arizona Sunday night. The epicenters were just north of Black Canyon City in central Arizona off Interstate 17.

4.1-magnitude Arizona earthquake shakes metro Phoenix

Residents reported shaking across metro Phoenix on Sunday night amid at least three quakes that struck near Black Canyon City.

A string of earthquakes north of Phoenix gave the Valley a rare jolt Sunday night, and the largest – a magnitude 4.1 just before 11:30 p.m. – rattled homes across the region.

The series of at least three Arizona earthquakes generated no reports of notable damage, but left people swaying or stunned from Black Canyon City, closest to the epicenter, to Camp Verde and across metro Phoenix as far as Queen Creek.

Michael Conway of the Arizona Geological Survey said Monday morning that scientists had not identified the causative fault line yet. Because the earthquake was small and did not rupture the ground, it will be hard to identify where it originated, Conway said.He also said there will be aftershocks over the next few days, many of them too small to feel.

Description
A storm that blew through the West Valley this afternoon left the Ocotillo District and downtown Glendale area littered with downed trees and power lines and flooded roads. Power is out throughout the district said Councilman Jamie Aldama, although power has been restored to some of the affected areas. The downed power lines were on Ocotillo Road between 53rd and 55th avenues. The storm also brought hail along with the wind that also blew away awnings from homes and shingles off roofs. Residents throughout the area taped off streets and began clearing trees and branches off streets. Aldama was driving throughout the district, checking damage and talking with residents after the storm.

Description
Wind from a powerful storm damaged buildings and knocked down trees and utility poles as a low-pressure system moved through the Phoenix area. Damage from the storm late Sunday appeared to be heaviest on the metro area's near west side. It included heavy damage to cotton warehouses, including some which lost their roofs, and a gas station's carport-style roof that was knocked over. At the Calcot warehouse facility near 51st Avenue and Missouri, there were more than 30 buildings on the property and now half of those buildings are gone. Some of the structures were made of wood and others steel, but they were no match for the powerful storm.

Description
A chemical leak at Intel Corp's manufacturing complex in Arizona has been contained and two workers were taken to hospital for observation, a spokesman for the chipmaker said on Monday. During a tool installation in a basement at the sprawling plant southeast of Phoenix a tube was severed, leading to a spill of around 100 gallons (379 liters) of ammonium hydroxide, said Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy. Ten workers near the spill reported to the facility's medical station and two of those people were sent to hospital for observation, Mulloy said. The spill was in a confined area and no chemicals have been exposed to the public, he said. "The leak has ended. It has been contained. Right now they're making plans for the cleanup," Mulloy said. Chandler police spokesman Seth Tyler said fire department crews were called to the scene at about 1:30 p.m. local time after a report that there was "an incident with multiple injuries." He said a construction crew working inside one of the buildings accidentally cut into a pipe. "During the construction process, a pipe was cut that feeds ammonium into a room in the basement," he said. "The leak was immediately isolated."

PHOENIX -- A spring storm dumped snow in northern Arizona and brought rain and wind to the Valley on Saturday, uprooting trees and leaving thousands without power.
The National Weather Service said Flagstaff received about 5 inches of snow.
"This is great because I was in 90-degree weather in Tucson," Lupe Juvera said as she scraped snow off her car with a newspaper.
Flagstaff residents welcomed the April snow showers following the dry winter.
"The weather's awesome today. It's a good change," resident Alicia Bruchman said. "We had a really, really dry winter so it's fun to have winter in April. By tomorrow it'll be sunny and warm again, and this is the best kind of snow when it doesn't stay."
In Phoenix, wind gusts reached more than 50 mph.

A group of tourists on their way back from sightseeing at the Grand Canyon are lucky to be alive after their tour bus was swept away by flood waters in northern Arizona this afternoon. The water then carried the bus 300 yards before it flipped onto its side in the flooded wash.

In all, 33 people were on the bus when it flipped. Thankfully, none of them were injured.
A spokesman for the Northern Arizona Consolidated Fire District said the incident happened just before 2 p.m. He said the bus approached a low-lying area and was swept away by a flash flood.

The passengers and the driver managed to escape the bus by climbing through windows and swimming to dry land.
By the time the passengers had escaped, the water had risen to 8 feet in some areas.
Arizona is in the middle of its monsoon season, when flash-floods are common in some of the low-lying areas and mountain passes.
